A Proposed Bill Would Allow Self-Driving Cars To Operate In DC

New legislation proposed last week would help pave the way for self-driving cars to operate in the District. 

Councilman Kenyan McDuffie introduced the Autonomous Vehicle Amendments Act of 2025 which would permit these type of cars to fully operate in the city. 

For the last few years, self-driving car company Waymo has been testing out its vehicles in the city with the help of human drivers, but these cars are not legal in the city without a driver as an assistant.

Waymo, which currently operates in Phoenix, Austin, LA and San Francisco, is hoping to start operations in DC next year.
