A First Look at Crummell School Transformation in Ivy City

In 2021, Mayor Bowser approved funding to transform the long-vacant Crummell School in Ivy City (map) into a new community center. Now, we have a sense as to what the center will look like.
On Monday, plans filed with DC's Historic Preservation Office (HPO) reveal the first renderings for the new community center designed by Sorg.

The project consists of three buildings -- the original historic building, a fitness center, and a gymnasium – connected by an atrium.
The historic building will house classrooms, lounges, a computer room, a demonstration kitchen, and multipurpose rooms. The new additions will include the gymnasium, fitness rooms, yoga rooms, and dance studios.
The Crummell School, named for Black minister Alexander Crummell, has been vacant for almost 50 years. Ivy City residents have been asking the city to transform the building into a recreation and community space for neighborhood youth.
