An all-affordable development is on the boards blocks from Skyland Town Center.
Durrani Development and Compass Design and Development have applied for zoning approval to construct an 86-unit apartment building at 2483-2491 Alabama Avenue SE (map). The site, where a vacant former church is located, is in the RA-1 zone, requiring a special exception for new residential development.

The three-story, U-shaped building will have 14 surface parking spaces fronting a north-facing courtyard, as well as a "tot lot" on the northeast side. The all-affordable development will include one- to three-bedroom units with and without dens. The building will also have shared laundry and bike room in the basement, and a green roof and solar panel array.

GPS Designs is the project architect of the primarily brick building, and portions of the design include blue tiles in four shades which form a gradient intended to "dissolve" into the sky.
A zoning hearing has not yet been scheduled.
