Rendering for 965 Florida Avenue.
It looks like it will be Whole Foods, not Harris Teeter, coming to a site near U Street.
The Washington Business Journal reported on Thursday that a source familiar with the project planned for 965 Florida Avenue NW (map) said that Whole Foods will be the anchor grocery tenant at the development. The project is a joint venture from MRP Residential, The JBG Companies, Fundrise and Ellis Development.
The initial plans when the team was awarded the site in 2013 by the city included a 370,000 square-foot mixed-use building with a residential component and a market made up of stores and small grocers on the ground-level. One of the planned residential towers would have approximately 165 units.
In February 2014, JBG managing partner James Iker said that the team planned “to bring a full-service grocery to the neighborhood” and that grocery store was expected to be Harris Teeter. Rebecca Cooper of the Washington Business Journal now says the team has “changed course and are nearing a final deal with Whole Foods.”
