At Monday night’s ANC 6D meeting, Brad Fennell of W.C. Smith announced that his firm has a signed lease with Whole Foods for 800 New Jersey Ave SE (map). The lease is tacit confirmation of rampant talk that the high-end grocer was planning to open in the Navy Yard, about six blocks north of the ballpark.
Fennell was quick to note that this is not an official announcement by Whole Foods itself, who did not have anyone in attendance. The corporation is expected to make an announcement of its own in November.
Still, attendees at the meeting treated it as confirmation enough; the room started clapping when Fennell delivered the news.
“We do have a signed lease, and we are going to be moving forward,” he said.
Excitement surrounding Whole Foods is not merely residents’ hunger for a grocery store in a neighborhood without one. Of all grocery store possibilities, Whole Foods in particular is seen as a catalyst for nascent or transitional neighborhoods. The location on P Street in Logan Circle, for example, is credited with locking in and accelerating the dramatic turnaround of that neighborhood 13 years ago.
