With the new Harris Teeter in NoMa now open, we decided to check in with the NoMa BID to review notable developments in 2010 in the northeast DC neighborhood that is being built from the ground up.

Here is a section-by-section look at business openings, office leasings and residential and retail development news that happened in the neighborhood in 2010 or planned for 2011.

Openings

  • Potbelly’s, TD Bank, Georgetown Valet and Tynan Coffee & Tea have all opened at the 2.5 million square-foot mixed-use Constitution Square in the past few months. The 50,000 square-foot Harris Teeter on the ground floor of Constitution Square is also now officially open for business.

  • A CVS (currently under construction) will open in January at 1200 First Street NE (map).

  • In April 2011, a Hilton Garden Inn and Watershed Restaurant, the next eatery from Todd and Ellen Gray of Equinox fame, are scheduled to open at Constitution Square.
  • Gillian Clark of Colorado Kitchen fame has signed a lease to open a restaurant at the Loree Grand. No opening date has been announced.

Office Leasing Announcements and Move-Ins

  • Three million square feet of office space has been leased in NoMa in the past three years. The Department of Veteran Affairs announced its fourth lease in NoMa at the end of November, bringing the total square footage leased in the neighborhood this year to 889,678 square feet.

  • By October, 1,900 Department of Justice employees had moved into their offices at Constitution Square. 1,400 General Services Administration employees will be fully moved into 1275 First Street NE (map) by the middle of December.

Residential/Retail Development News

  • The Flats 130, a 440-unit apartment building located at 130 M Street NE (map), opened in October.

  • StonebridgeCarras and Walton Street Capital plan to break ground in May of 2011 on the next phase of Constitution Square in NoMa, which will include 200 apartments and 345,000 square feet of commercial space.
  • The 212-unit Loree Grand apartment building opened its doors in June and is over 50 percent leased, a pace that has far exceeded Bozzuto Management’s expectations.

  • One of the four Wal-Mart stores that will open in the District in the coming years will be located at 801 New Jersey Avenue NW (map).

NoMa is now home to approximately 1,400 residents, 800 of which are new this year. The daytime population is about 39,000, an increase of 6,000 employees since the beginning of the year.
