This weekend, a major addition to the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood opened to the public. The Yards Park is a 5.5-acre landscaped waterfront park with a boardwalk, two large lawn spaces, and dog run, and 60-foot sculpted pillar called the Light Tower made of prisms that reflect light by day and are illuminated by night.
In addition to providing welcome green space, the new park will connect nearby residential projects to the Anacostia River, helping realize the vision of Capitol Riverfont as one of DC’s few waterfront neighborhoods.
Like many areas undergoing transformation, the Capitol Riverfront felt the effects of the economic crisis as many planned projects lost financing. Just a few weeks ago, however, a stalled residential project in the neighborhood, Foundry Lofts, secured a financing deal that put the project back on track. That development combined with the debut of the Yards Park this past weekend are tentative signs of renewed progress for one of DC’s youngest and most ambitious neighborhoods.
