The Washington Commanders announced Thursday that global architecture and design firm HKS will be the lead architect for its new 65,000-seat stadium at the RFK site in Northeast DC.
HKS is no stranger to designing NFL stadiums, as the firm’s portfolio includes SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, and AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Planned as a 65,000-seat, roofed venue, the DC stadium will be designed for year-round use, with more than 200 events annually, from NFL games and concerts to community festivals and national celebrations.
“HKS has a proven track record of delivering world-class stadiums that balance design, functionality and community impact," Mark Clouse, President of the Washington Commanders, said in a statement. "This partnership underscores our shared vision to create a stadium that enhances the fan experience, strengthens our connection with the community, and sets a new standard for the future of sports and entertainment—delivering an exceptional experience that will serve our team, our fans, and the District for decades to come.”
The next stage of the project will involve developing concept and schematic designs and holding a series of community engagement meetings with local residents and leaders in collaboration with the city. Those meetings are slated for November and December, with vertical construction expected to begin in spring 2027 and completion targeted for 2030.
