UberX Drops DC Fares by 15 Percent

Car-service giant Uber has slashed prices on its lowest-cost service, Uber X, in the DC area.
The cut, announced Friday, will bring down fares by 15 percent on all Uber X rides. Uber X is the company’s service that contracts with drivers in everyday cars, not the fancier black chauffeur cars available on the more expensive Uber service.
The change is probably a move to speed up slow winter sales and likely not permanent. The company, which has seen demand spike appreciably when it provides similar cuts in other cities, promised to guarantee earnings to drivers and pay them the difference if the gamble doesn’t pay off.
In a concurrent move, the company also promised to give customers an on-time guarantee from now until February 13. If drivers don’t arrive within 10 minutes of a pick-up time, riders will get 25 percent off their next ride on the service.
