1318 10th Street NW
In 2005, the current owners of this infill row house (constructed in 1988) completely rebuilt their home. From the roof to the plumbing system to the kitchen and bathrooms, the couple went about creating an energy-efficient home customized to fit their needs.

Kitchen
The changes are noticeable and effective. Thanks to efficient appliances, good windows and plenty of insulation, utility bills in the home now max out at $50 per month. The duo brought in Egyptian and Italian marble, a Toto toilet, and Kohler fixtures for the bathrooms and kitchen (oh, and the much-discussed granite counter tops).

Office
In addition to making the home sustainable, the owners reconfigured the layout, changing a four-bedroom home into a property with one master suite, an office, and three separate living spaces. (Despite the fact that a number of walls have been knocked down, the home could still be used as a three-bedroom.) The oversized one-car garage also has room for a work space, and the backyard has a vegetable garden.
