This Week's Find: A Contemporary Hidden Inside a Colonial

Great room and kitchen
Bethesda is a neighborhood filled with colonial homes and while This Week’s Find fits that mold from the outside, it has a surprisingly modern vibe once you step through the front door.
When current owner Corey McVicar, a concert pianist with contemporary tastes, bought the house several years ago, he noted that it was a little too “Laura Ashley” for his tastes. So, he went about making a number of changes, including opening up the space, removing more traditional trimmings, and replacing the heavy front doors with glass doors, bringing light into the foyer.

Bathroom
The home’s modest facade conceals a pretty enormous living space. At 3,210 square-feet, the house has a rambling main level with an extensive master suite, and the backyard is so private that McVicar opened up the bedroom’s bathroom to the patio: French doors next to the stand-alone tub make bathing an indoor/outdoor experience (see above). The kitchen/great room also opens to the terrace and has a wall largely made of windows. “The great room becomes a sun room in the winter,” said McVicar, but the trees keep it shaded in the summer.
