1242 K Street SE
When Bernadette Grullon bought 1242 K Street SE back in 2003, she remembers the row house being covered in vinyl siding with an interior that the previous owners had cut up in a very weird way.
So Grullon, a landscape architect who works for the Arlington County parks department, got together with fellow architect Guillermo Garita (the two went to school together), and set about re-imagining the space.
“We ripped out the stairs and put in a floating staircase and created a wall of exposed brick that ran from the front to the back of the house,” Grullon told UrbanTurf. “We also moved the half bath from under the stairs to the other side of the room, so that everything — the bathroom, fireplace and laundry — all sat on one side.”

The two also installed 5-inch walnut plank floors on the main level, and created a rear wall made entirely of glass that leads out to a back patio area. On the top level of the home, the duo increased the width of the back room — from 7 feet to 12 feet — or as Grullon puts it, “as much as zoning would allow.”
Grullon won’t be moving very far from the home that she re-designed (just to Brookland), but the house could be off the market by the time you get back from vacation as several showings have been scheduled since it was listed yesterday.
