This Week's Find: Chloethiel Woodard Smith-Designed Mid-Century Modern on the Eastern Shore

This Week's Find is a mid-century modern waterfront property on Maryland's Eastern Shore that exudes the architectural style of the late 1950s. 

Known at times as "Far Horizons" and the "Washburn Residence", the house was designed by prestigious architect Chloethiel Woodard Smith, known for running the largest woman-owned architecture firm in the country at one point and for laying the foundation for post-Urban Renewal Southwest DC. In the 1950s, Woodard Smith took on designing a series of private residences in the Maryland suburbs.

Located on an 8.85-acre site, the single-story house is shaped like a tuning fork, creating multiple outdoor spaces including a side patio and a large courtyard just outside the front door. The interior remains true to the property's origins, with pitched ceilings, parquet hardwood floors, and wood-paneled walls. A hall is lined with windows on either side, on one side looking into a glass-ceilinged solarium.

The living room has a central panel fireplace flanked with floor-to-ceiling windows, and the office/bonus room has built-in shelving on either side of another panel fireplace. The mod kitchen has red-and-white checkerboard floors; red and turquoise cabinetry, walls, and countertops; a stainless steel oven with a hood; and sliding glass doors out to a patio with a garden enclosed by a brickwork privacy wall.

Most of the bathrooms are tiled in monochrome, and the bedrooms include features like a brick panel fireplace, sliding glass door-access to the property, and a sitting nook with a wall of windows between a bedroom and its bathroom. The owner's bedroom has clerestory windows beneath the pitched ceiling and two sets of sliding glass doors.

Owners Bill and Nancy Burton commissioned architect Charles Paul Goebel to build a complementary pool house, complete with a covered patio, interior polished concrete floors, a kitchen, a full bath, and an outdoor shower. The property also sits along 550 feet of linear shoreline and comes with a private dock.
