This Week's Find: A 12-Month Mid-Century Renovation in Silver Spring

The owner of This Week's Find used his background in construction to renovate this Silver Spring mid-century modern ranch house over the course of a year.
The first step was to replace the foundation slab at the home, which was in disrepair. The owner then opened up the floorplan and started from scratch, keeping only the fireplace wall.

The open-concept interior has shelves and an industrial pipe coat rack built into a nook. The owner welded and installed barn doors throughout the house to save space, including a pair adjacent to the entryway to conceal the laundry room and one of the bathrooms. The wood that comprises these doors and other features, like the pillar and ceiling beam that delineate the living and dining areas, has been treated using the Shou Sugi Ban method, which uses fire to preserve the wood.
The U-shaped kitchen has floating shelves made of live edge hackberry and quartz countertops with a waterfall peninsula. Several oversized windows to the floor are on either side of the open main area, and there is a wine closet behind sliding glass doors adjacent to the rear patio.
The en-suite bath in the owner's bedroom has a frosted glass door leading to an outdoor shower framed in corrugated metal. The backyard includes a heated figure 8-shaped pool and a propane fire pit framed by seating with a TV and built-in outdoor speakers.
A concrete-topped bar separates the pool deck from a sunshade-covered patio next to a swing. The property also features imported outdoor plants (like palm trees), stone pebbles from the Delaware River, and concrete pavers that create checkerboard pathways through the lawn areas.
