The Streetcars Are Coming...By Boat

The DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) recently uploaded photos of the city’s first streetcars heading off from the Czech Republic towards the city by boat. The cars are expected to arrive in DC around the middle of December.
According to DDOT, there will be eight streetcar lines in all, built in three phases. The first streetcars will run from Anacostia along H Street and Benning Road, and then on downtown. The second phase will run along 7th Street and Georgia Avenue, and Minnesota Avenue between Anacostia and the Minnesota Avenue Metro.
While just the sight of streetcars heading toward the DC area for installation is exciting, it is important to remember that this project has encountered its fair share of hurdles, so to think that it might be smooth sailing for the rest of the way may be a bit optimistic. That said, DDOT Director Gabe Klein seems very intent on making this project happen.
