The Future of Walter Reed

The redevelopment plan for Walter Reed Army Medical Center has been released, outlining what a mixed-use plan may look like when construction starts in the coming years.

Next year, the federal government is pulling out of Walter Reed, and for several months the DC government has been soliciting community feedback about how the 62-acre area should be used. Michael Neibauer of the Washington Business Journal reported that the city “expects the Army to convey, through a sale or other means, 62.5 of Walter Reed’s 113 acres to the city in 2012.”

Neibauer described what the plan lays out for the site:

The District’s reuse plan features 40 acres of open space and 2.2 million square feet of development — [including] 850 residential units, 200,000 square feet of retail and 90,000 square feet of office space. More than 100 homes will be set aside for homeless and veteran families. Two charter schools will occupy an existing campus building. Howard University will manage an ambulatory care center on site. And Georgia Avenue will be the hub of a “strong retail presence.”
