As we approach the end of 2021, UrbanTurf is looking back at the five priciest homes to sell in the DC area this year. This year's top sales included the most expensive home ever sold in the DC region and a beloved former Washington National pulling up his stakes.
#5: The Piano Estate
The fifth most expensive home sold in the region this year is The Piano Estate, an extensively renovated home in DC once owned by the founder of the largest piano and keyboard retailers in the U.S. Renovated by Coba Properties in 2020, the home sold in July for just south of $11 million. The home has a wine cellar, a gated driveway, a garden with an outdoor kitchen, and a 42-foot swimming pool.

#4: Seven Bedrooms in Wesley Heights
This seven-bedroom home in DC's Wesley Heights neighborhood is the one property on the list that didn't actually hit the market. The Cathedral Avenue home sold off-market at the end of June for about $11.5 million, making it the fourth priciest home to sell in the region this year.

#3: Wilbur Ross' DC Estate
Former Commerce secretary Wilbur Ross sold his Massachusetts Avenue Heights estate in August for $13 million. The seven-bedroom Beaux Arts mansion sits on just over an acre of land and has the trappings that one might expect for a home priced in this territory.
In addition to a number of rooms meant for entertaining, there are manicured grounds and terraces that look out on Rock Creek Park, a 12-person theater as well as a library on the lower level, and the house is equipped with a catering kitchen and staff quarters.

#2 -- Max Scherzer's McLean House
The five-bedroom Northern Virginia home of former Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer sold in late November for its $15 million asking price. The home went under contract within a day of being listed a few weeks earlier.
The house has 250 feet of waterfront frontage and 180-degree views of the Potomac River. Glass walls along the back of the home frame views of the river in the living room, dining room and kitchen. The listing has a home gym, as well as a pool deck, infinity pool and outdoor entertaining area.

#1 -- The Priciest Piece of Real Estate in the DC Area
A portion of George Washington's Mount Vernon estate sold in October for a whopping $48 million, making it the priciest residential sale on record in the DC region.
The 16.5-acre property along the banks of the Potomac known as River View was listed last year with Heather Corey of TTR Sotheby's International Realty for $60 million. The home was owned by Robert Stevens, the former CEO of Lockheed Martin.
The listing includes a 16,000 square-foot main house, as well 400 feet of water frontage, a three-bedroom guest house, a fully reconstituted carriage house with four parking spaces and a studio apartment, a waterfront dock and reproduction of English colonial boxwood and rose gardens.
