DC’s drop in ranking on Forbes 2010 list of the most wired cities in the country may have been unwarranted.

TBD’s Sommer Mathis reported recently that the DC neighborhood of Bloomingdale may eventually set up a network that would offer free Wi-Fi to all its residents. The project is the brainchild of community leaders and DC’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO).

The free neighborhood network is not a done deal as TBD reports that the team is in the process of figuring out where wireless repeaters and antennas should go. As to whether or not other DC neighborhoods will be following suit, don’t hold your breath.

From TBD:

OCTO spokesperson Rebekah Kenefick stressed that the main reason OCTO was able to move forward in Bloomingdale was that it was really the community leaders who were making it happen. In order to replicate the initial pilot elsewhere, the city would need to identify a long list of locations where hardware could be installed, many of which would necessarily include private property.
