The new development at the site of the former Central Union Mission at 14th and R Street NW will deliver as a luxury rental building in early December, UrbanTurf has learned. The previous occupants of the Central Union Mission have moved to the mission’s new location at 65 Massachusetts Avenue NW.
“It’s our plan that the residential portion of the project will be luxury rentals,” developer Jeffrey Schonberger said. “We think the project will deliver in about eight weeks and we hope to be conducting hard hat tours in the next few weeks.”
The building’s corner retail tenant will be Detroit-based Shinola, a luxury brand that makes and sells watches, bikes and other goods. The hip, upscale brand currently has brick-and-mortar stores in Detroit, TriBeCa and Minneapolis, but has been considering a DC expansion since at least June, according to the Washingtonian.
Schonberger called the brand a “hand-in-glove fit” for the residences. “We’re very excited,” he said.

The 51-unit project is currently in the final phases of a window-heavy rehabilitation of the existing buildings, and set-back additions on 1625 though 1629 14th Street NW. 1350 R Street NW, the main address for the former Mission was updated, while additions are being built on top of the buildings at 1625 through 1629 14th Street NW. Last year, architect Eric Colbert told UrbanTurf that the layouts for the units will range from loft-y condos to two-story duplexes, with a mix of larger and smaller units.
