A raze application has been filed for the former Safeway grocery store at 4865 MacArthur Boulevard NW (map), paving the way for redevelopment of the now-shuttered store.
The application to raze the building comes several months after the Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) voted unanimously that the store did not merit historic designation.

What will replace the store is unclear at the moment. A proposal in 2014 to turn the site into a mixed-use development with 100 condos drew a good deal of opposition from the neighborhood. Safeway has entered into a ground lease with developer Trammell Crow who has not made public what their plans will be for the site.
