No Round Furniture For the Roundhouse

Last year, UrbanTurf covered one of the roundest properties to ever hit the market in DC and on Wednesday, we went back for a look inside.
The Roundhouse is one of the city’s Octagonal Houses, and is just what it sounds like: a house with round walls. The main living level is one circular space, while the second story is divided into four rooms with rounded walls.
Last year, Ditto Residential and architect Chong Cao revamped the home, which was in need of a renovation, and added significant square footage. The home went on the market in November and sold in January.
In March, we visited new owner Laurie Sherman to find out how she enjoyed living in the circular space. “It’s absolutely fabulous,” she said at the time — but hadn’t yet filled the home with furniture and decor to suit the unusual space.
On Wednesday, Sherman invited us back to see the furnished product.
Those expecting a lot of round furniture (as we were), will be a bit disappointed. While on the hunt for rounded furniture, Sherman discovered that these furnishings come at a price (she found one round couch on the market for $8,000), so she opted to use traditional furniture in creative layouts.

Because of the roundness of the walls, Sherman doesn’t have too much furniture up against them, and instead has created distinct rooms within the large expanse of the first floor space. The upstairs rooms are cozier. There were a couple challenges, like hanging giant, planar pieces of art on a bending walls, but Sherman simply “made it work,” she told us. Check out the photos below.
