In November 2006, a drunk driver crashed into the back of a stopped car on Florida Avenue, killing two people, before slamming into a home located at 605 Florida Avenue NW (map). The home’s facade and turret were so badly damaged by the accident that DCRA deemed the property unfit to be inhabited.
Left for LeDroit happily reports today that after four years, the home is in the final stages of being rebuilt. Because the entire facade needed to be torn down, it is not a stretch to call this home new construction, but as the photo shows, the property is not out of place with the rest of the historic homes on the block. The turret is back in place, and as Left For LeDroit notes, a “Q” sits atop it, in honor of the owner’s last name — Quarterman.
The four-year process of getting the home to where it is today was filled with trials and tribulations. The son of the owner wrote a letter to Prince of Petworth outlining the ups and downs. Read it here.
