If you live in a home that was damaged as the result of renovation work going on next door, the DC Council has proposed a bill for you.
The Substandard Construction Relief Amendment Act of 2018, introduced by the Council last week, would order those whose construction is not up to code or is otherwise illegal to either repair or pay restitution to adjacent homeowners whose properties are affected by that work.

The bill would also alter the Construction Codes Approval and Amendments Act of 1986 to empower homeowners adjacent to construction that doesn't meet code to file civil suit against the bad actor to seek damages aside from the cost of repair or restitution.
This bill comes over a year after a couple was ordered to fork over $1.3 million to repair substandard work on 19 houses they flipped in the District.
