After years of talking about the activity on H Street NE and 14th Street NW, another major avenue that is bursting with development dollars entered the discussion in 2012: 9th Street NW.
Though the street seems quiet now, the list of incoming developments, hotels and restaurants could barely be contained on the page when UrbanTurf covered it back in February.
A look down a now-quiet stretch of 9th Street
With over a billion dollars going towards creating major projects like the 10-acre CityCenter project at H Street NW and multi-block developments like CityMarket at O and JBG’s planned project on Florida Avenue NW, it can feel like the mammoth developments are the only thing worth talking about on the avenue. But there’s more.
In February, UrbanTurf reported on a now 70-unit apartment building from CAS Riegler planned for the former art gallery/event space known as Fight Club near 9th and N Streets NW. Not too long after that, Altus Realty released plans for an 87-unit residential building in Blagden Alley.
Seasonal Pantry
Businesses like Devrouax and Purnell Architects (875 N Street NW), Family Matters (1507 9th Street NW) and Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (1426 9th Street NW) have taken space on or around the street, and the current and forthcoming restaurants in the area also have people talking. SUNdeVICH, Seasonal Pantry, and Corduroy are already drawing crowds, and the avenue has started to attract places like Georgetown’s Fino which is relocating to 9th Street in 2013. The street is also becoming home to some very innovative bar concepts: Cause, a watering hole that gives all its profits to charity, opened up in late-October.
While we may have been premature in calling 9th Street DC’s next “it” boulevard back in February, it certainly seems like we will be proven prophetic in the coming years.
