More Details Emerge For the Future of One of DC's Last Diners

A few more details are emerging for the concept that will replace the American City Diner in upper NW DC. 

Restaurateur Steve Salis, best known for co-founding &pizza as well as owning Ted's Bulletin, Federalist Pig and Kramerbooks & Afterwords, has plans to turn the former diner at 5532 Connecticut Avenue NW (map) into a French brasserie and café, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner at a reasonable price point. Last year, Salis described the concept as "approachable but sophisticated", insisting that the idea is to ensure the new restaurant remains a neighborhood mainstay accessible to all.

In August, a demolition permit application to remove interior and exterior elements was accepted by the city, an indication that work could be starting soon. Documents filed with the city show plans to add on to the rear of the diner building creating a floorplan with a large 30-seat bar, 76 seats in the main dining area, and a 54-seat outdoor patio. Last year, Salis told the local ANC that he planned to "preserve as much as we can preserve" of the existing building.

An opening date has yet to be announced for the new restaurant.
