As the DC area further locks down in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus, Montgomery County has taken action to protect renters who may be unable to work.

Yesterday, the county sheriff's office declared that all eviction orders will be stayed for the next 15 days in order to prevent displacement of renters who may be unable to work. The declaration can be extended in 15-day intervals as needed.

The governor of Maryland declared a state of emergency in response to the pandemic earlier this month, and the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization have advised that loss of housing would be counterproductive to the larger goals of limiting contact and spread of the virus via social distancing and self-quarantine.

The DC Council is considering an emergency bill next week that would also prohibit evictions to be carried out and prohibit utility cut-offs for nonpayment while the city remains under a state of emergency. Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a state of emergency and a public health emergency earlier this week.
