Last night at the Reeves Center, The JBG Companies presented preliminary plans for a mixed-use residential project on the three parcels of land that the developer purchased along Florida Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets NW earlier this year.

JBG hopes to turn the land, currently near-vacant except for a flea market that operates on the weekend, into two buildings with five stories of apartments, ground-floor retail and one level of underground parking. The larger building, bounded on the north by Florida Avenue, will run from 8th to 9th Street, and the smaller building will sit just to the east.

JBG’s Lauren Jezienicki said that the firm held a design competition for the development and is now working with winners, Seattle-based Miller Hull Architects, to come up with a blueprint for the building. Jezienicki spoke specifically about maximizing 8th Street’s wide sidewalks and relatively narrow street with sidewalk seating and general pedestrian friendliness. They hope to have a concrete plan for the project in place by the first quarter of next year. If all goes well with the ANC, Historic Preservation Review Board and community members, ground could be broken by 2013 with construction expected to take about 22 months.

JBG has a lot of plans for the 14th Street/U Street Corridor. Read more about what is in the works below.
