At an event last Friday, a representative from The JBG Cos. hinted that an independent movie theater may be coming to one of their planned development projects in Shaw.
JBG is about to start construction on two major projects in (and around) the neighborhood: the 375-unit Atlantic Plumbing development at V and 8th Street NW, and a 242-unit two-building complex on the south side of Florida Avenue NW between 7th Street and 9th Streets (map). Earlier, JBG mentioned that they were looking to Brooklyn for amenity inspiration.
At Marcus & Millichap’s DC Multifamily Forum, JBG’s Edward Chaglassian revealed that they hope to engage in “placemaking” with the amenities of the new projects, and though it is far from a done deal, Chaglassian confirmed to UrbanTurf that they are in talks with an independent movie theater for one of their sites.
Right now, Shaw residents need to hike to Gallery Place or E Street Cinema to enjoy a movie on the big screen. It is likely that if the theater materializes, it will be about the size of the West End Cinema, which is tucked away on 23rd Street NW.
