Housing Inventory Drops Noticeably in DC Neighborhoods

If you have been frustrated by the selection of homes on the market in certain DC neighborhoods recently, you may have good reason.

Recent market reports from Long & Foster show that the available inventory of homes for sale in DC dropped about 5 percent between November 2009 and November 2010. While that might not seem very significant, the decrease of available listings in select DC neighborhoods like Columbia Heights, Mount Pleasant and Capitol Hill was quite noticeable. Here is a rundown of neighborhoods that have less inventory than last year:

• Petworth/Shepherd Park — 319 active listings in November 2010, a decrease of 4 percent from November 2009.

• Adams Morgan/U Street — 222 active listings in November 2010, a decrease of 4 percent from November 2009.

• Foggy Bottom/West End — 124 active listings in November 2010, a decrease of 7 percent from November 2009.

• Anacostia/Hillcrest — 606 active listings in November 2010, a decrease of 9 percent from November 2009.

• Brookland/Woodridge — 135 active listings in November 2010, a decrease of 13 percent from November 2009.

• Penn Quarter/Shaw — 181 active listings in November 2010, a decrease of 13 percent from November 2009.

• Columbia Heights/Mount Pleasant — 85 active listings in November 2010, a decrease of 17 percent from November 2009.

• Capitol Hill (Northeast) — 244 active listings in November 2010, a decrease of 21 percent from November 2009.
