Ground Broken at Georgia Commons Site: Figure 1

The ground was finally broken this morning on Georgia Commons, a $35 million mixed-use project in Petworth that will include 130 residential units and a new health clinic for the neighborhood. The project, whose financing has been in question for some time, will be developed by Jair Lynch Development Partners.

Originally set to open last July, the project at 3910 Georgia Avenue NW had to deal with a gap in financing that delayed the start of construction. About $5 million of that money is now coming from the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and the Department of Housing and Community Development.

According to its website, Jair Lynch Development Partners sees this project as “a catalyst for resident-directed change in the Petworth neighborhood, which is increasingly threatened by gentrifying forces in adjacent Columbia Heights.” As noted above, the project will have 130 residential units, approximately 60 of which will be reserved for low-income families.
