Eastern Market in Capitol Hill reopens today, two years after a fire gutted the 136 year-old market. During a $22 million renovation, the vendors that call the market home continued to sell in a temporary structure set up across the street.
There was a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning, and on Saturday opening activities will include performances by several musical groups and free face painting and mehndi art. In the North Hall of the new market, there will be an exhibit about its history and a section devoted to the fire’s impact and the reconstruction. Many believe that the fire was the result of faulty electric wiring.
While the market continued to draw crowds and maintain its loyal customer base over the last two years, its return only bolsters Capitol Hill’s popular reputation.
