Ten years ago, UrbanTurf reported on a new building trend popping up around DC: apartment projects constructed out of shipping containers. Now, one of the city's first shipping container developments has hit the market.
Currently used as student housing, the 24-bed/24-bath building at 3305 7th Street NE (map) was listed this week for just under $4 million with Marcus & Millichap. Designed by Travis Price Architects, the project is constructed out of 18 shipping containers, with each floor consisting of six, 180 square foot bedrooms and six individual bathrooms. There is a large common area with a furnished dining and living room, kitchen and laundry area. According to the listing description, the property is currently 92% leased.

"It's an ideal construction medium for DC because of its durability and maintenance," Marcus & Millichap's Stacey Milam said about the listing.
This shipping container development took just seven months to build back in 2014. The floors are a mixture of welded metal and wide-plank, and corrugated plastic was used on the building’s exterior.
The delivery of the building was a first for the city, and resulted in a variety of shipping container concepts being pitched around the city. Most of those developments did not move forward, but below are some of the ideas proposed over the years:
