When someone in DC wants to illustrate the development boom in the city, they often point to the high number of cranes dotting the skyline. And now we know just how many cranes are active in the city.
DC currently has 29 cranes in operation, according to the Seattle Times. This summer, Seattle had 58 construction cranes at work — the most of any city in the country as counted by Rider Levett Bucknall, a company that keeps track of crane counts worldwide. Los Angeles is in second place with 40 cranes.
While 29 cranes is certainly not shabby, the nation’s capital would likely have more if there wasn’t a height limit, as cranes are only used to construct buildings seven stories or higher.
Cranes are usually on a job for six to 18 months at a time; development demand has increased to the point that wait times for cranes in major cities have doubled.
