The 2012 DC Design House, a 10,000 square-foot home near American University, hit the market on Sunday morning. The mansion was built in 1956 for Dr. Francisco Aguirre, a Latin American newspaper magnate. The Aguirre family lived in the home for decades and the family still owns the home, at least until someone ponies up almost $4 million.
Every year, interior designers fill a property (dubbed the DC Design House) with their work and sell tickets for entry, with proceeds going to charity. The program has been running for five years and this year, the Children’s National Medical Center is the beneficiary of the proceeds raised from tickets sold and the house will be open to visitors until May 13th.
The design — wallpaper, accessories, plants, chandeliers — on display throughout the house is definitely distracting (here are some “before” pictures). But the bones of the Georgian-style property underneath look as impressive, with skylights, balconies, an ornate staircase, elegant built-ins and more cool features.
