The relatively new Smart car-sharing service car2go has broken the 10,000 member mark in DC, but chances are the number of users in the city is well above that level.
Car2go’s Katie Stafford told UrbanTurf recently that there are over 10,000 car2go users in DC, but intimated that the number could be higher than that when official numbers are released in late March. It is not hard to imagine, given that six months ago there were already over 8,000 registered users in the city.
For those that don’t know, car(s)2go are the blue and white, two-seater Smart cars that you see squeezed in a small space on a downtown block or looking diminutive next to a pick-up truck at a stoplight. Users pay a one-time $35 fee and then are sent a card in the mail that allows them to unlock cars around the city via an electronic panel on the windshield, and then take them for a spin. When finished, users park the car on the street and swipe the card again on the windshield. A mobile app on smartphones locates cars in the vicinity. The cost for using the service is 37 cents a minute plus tax, and car2go covers gas and insurance.
With the increase in users, it would seem that the company would also add cars in DC, but at the moment, Stafford said there are no plans to add to the city’s 300-car fleet.
