Black Cat to Lease Ground-Floor Space

Last month, UrbanTurf reported on the Black Cat’s plans to add a third floor. Last night, ANC 1B voted in support of the establishment’s plans — and more details have come to the light.
In tandem with the third-floor addition, the operations and uses currently on the ground floor are moving to the third level in order for the concert venue to lease the ground-floor space.
Located in the heart of the increasingly-vibrant and bustling 14th Street Corridor at 1811 14th Street NW (map), owner Dante Ferrando believes that the music venue is currently wasting prime street-level space that could add to the commercial streetscape — especially with the existing historic facade with its large windows.

“There’s no substantial change in the business” where the Black Cat’s operations are concerned, Ferrando explained to UrbanTurf, aside from creating an atrium of sorts. No speakers will be installed in the new outdoor lounge area.
The Historic Preservation Office will consider the Gronning Architects-designed plans later this month, which will also require approval from the BZA in order to move forward.
