Earlier this week, UrbanTurf featured a soon-to-be-completed church-to-condo conversion on Capitol Hill. Now, another church-to-residential conversion of a different kind is being proposed across town in Columbia Heights.
The owner of the semi-detached, three-story church at 3423 Holmead Place NW (map) has filed a zoning application (Case #19828) to build an addition to the church and change its use to accommodate seven residential units.

The conversion would involve removing the steeple, replacing it with a parapet to create more harmony with the neighboring (and taller) single-family homes, and an addition of 40 feet rather than the by-right 35 feet. The existing two base stories would be retained as-is, structurally.
Residents of the new development would have access to five surface parking spaces at the rear of the property (two of which will be for compact cars) and the building will have an elevator.
The units will include a 1,522 square-foot two-bedroom, 2.5 bath; three-bedroom units ranging from 1,290 to 1,522 square feet; and a top-level, 2,805 square-foot four-bedroom, 3.5 bath with private terrace and roof access. Sabouri Architects did the design.
