From The Wharf’s Stage 2 Phase 1 PUD Application.
On Monday night, ANC 6D decided not to support the PUD for The Wharf, the massive development project planned for the Southwest Waterfront, until issues, including the fate of the live-aboards of the Gangplank Marina, are resolved. Hoffman-Madison, the developers behind the $2 billion project, have several meetings before the zoning commission in July and hope to get approval for the project by the fall, in time for a groundbreaking in early 2013.
The ANC’s concerns largely revolved around the fate of the live-aboards of the Gangplank Marina. While Hoffman-Madison’s Monty Hoffman assured the community that they had no intention of displacing the live-aboards, gangplank residents who attended the meeting expressed their worry that their homes would be taken away from them as development moved forward. The committee shared their concerns, declaring it unacceptable that the fate of the live-aboards was not yet secure and in writing before the project moves forward.
Despite the concerns, ANC 6D Chairman Andy Litsky did make it clear that he supported the project overall and that Hoffman-Madison has been easy to work with. Shortly after the meeting, ANC 6D’s David Garber tweeted the following: “I know fellow #ANC6D commishs and I look forward to supporting this important project once liveaboard residents are appropriately protected.”
In addition to the fate of the Gangplank Marina, the vote of no-support was in part because of a timing problem, as although the committee has had fruitful conversations with the developers, they didn’t have time to read the materials summarizing various agreements before the meeting took place, and didn’t want to vote without reading first.
The ANC passed a resolution stating its desire to wait until several issues are resolved before throwing their support behind the project. They will meet again on July 9th.
