A new deck over North Capitol Street could bring an amphitheater, cafe and splash park to Bloomingdale.
Discussion of a deck over portions of North Capitol Street between S and V Streets has been swirling about for years now, led by community associations on both the east and west sides of the cross-city thoroughfare. Now, a design for the deck is being revealed.
The "North Capitol Promenade" will create an at-grade park spanning the underpass from V Street to Seaton Place. The park will incorporate an amphitheater, a "vintage streetcar cafe", and a children's splash park, and there will also be history timelines of the neighborhoods abutting North Capitol, including Bloomingdale, Eckington, Stronghold, and Edgewood.

The Bloomingdale Village Square (BVS) project is being lead by the Bloomingdale Civic Association and North Capitol Main Street. ZGF Architects is the designer.
"The Bloomingdale Village Square seeks to ensure a diverse, multicultural/multiracial, inclusive neighborhood through use of neighborhood history, architecture and design and civic engagement," BVS co-chair Bertha Holliday said in a statement. "The North Capitol deck-over project will incorporate all three elements and be intentionally welcoming to all."
BVS is holding a public meeting on January 25th to discuss the design with the community.
