Among the thousands of real estate professionals working in the DC metro area, many of the most successful are graduates of American University's Real Estate Masters of Science program at the Kogod School of Business.
The program has helped launch alumni's careers at prestigious local real estate firms like Costar Group, Vornado, Cassidy Turley, Studley, Eagle Bank, and First Capital Realty. The DC area is a market unlike any other, and Kogod provides both students and alumni access to a wealth of resources to help them navigate it, including the Real Estate Advisory Council, networking opportunities with thousands of other locally-based graduates, and affiliations with professional associations.
Students and alumni also have access to a team of veteran faculty who continuously explore and expand the field. Faculty like Peter Chinloy, a LEED-accredited Professor of Finance and Real Estate focused on innovation in real estate and property design and management.
Chinloy recently published “Hospitals: The Market for Health Care Facilities” (Real Estate Economics), in which he examined the development of hospitals and health care facilities, and the patterns in their occupancy rates. Chinloy found that occupancy rates in hospitals are similar to those of business hotels. “There is an implication for real estate’s conventional wisdom on rent control,” he concluded. “Hospitals have to build to ‘surge’ capacity for when they have the greatest demand, but that frequently results in a high number of vacancies. They don’t use pricing that’s sensitive to capacity, and the supply is heavily regulated.”
Kogod's Masters in Real Estate program offers two specializations: Finance and Real Estate Business. The program can be completed on a full- or part-time basis and requires 30 credit hours, composed of 18 credit hours of required core courses and 12 credit hours of electives.
