The Life Edited apartment.
Graham Hill has turned his New York City home into what he calls the “Life Edited apartment,” a 420-square foot studio that transforms, with the help of foldable/movable furniture and multi-functioning areas, into eight distinct rooms. Gizmodo reported on the home yesterday.
The Murphy bed that folds into the living room, storage in the couch and the desk that pulls out from the wall are fairly typical of small apartments. The truly innovative aspects of Hill’s place are features like a guest room located behind an easily movable bookshelf; when Hill has a guest, he simply pulls the bookshelf into the living room and unfolds two twin-sized beds from the wall, bunk-bed style. (Which did remind UrbanTurf a bit of this Seinfeld episode.)
The telescoping dining table.
The dining table is also surprisingly long: usually stored near the kitchen, it telescopes out to seat ten people. The kitchen maximizes space with induction burners that can be stored in a drawer when not in use, a drawer dishwasher, and a combination microwave and convection oven.
UrbanTurf also liked the bathroom that transforms, with a fold-out bench, into a telephone booth.
Hill, the founder of treehugger.com, wants to use his apartment as a model. While it likely took quite a bit of money to transform the small apartment (money that someone living in a studio might not have), LifeEdited is now working with developers to try and integrate some of the ideas into newly developing apartment buildings. The company is also working on producing some of the multi-use products.
We highly recommend watching Gizmodo’s video tour of the LifeEdited apartment here.
