In May, NASA put out a call to firms to “design and build a 3-D printed habitat for deep space exploration, including the agency’s journey to Mars.” The competition was open only to U.S. design firms, but that didn’t stop France’s FABulous from submitting an entry.

Working with scientists, architects and others, FABulous designed a structure that is created by robots drilling into the planet’s soil to extract iron, and that iron would then be used to print 3-D dome structures that would be insulated by a layer of water. The 3-D printing capabilities would also be able to print the home’s walls and furnishings, like a bed and chairs.

Inside, the home would have two levels that would include workstations, an elevated bed and places to grow plants. The concept is called Sfero, a combination of the words sphere, iron and water.
No word yet from NASA if they will consider the submission from FABulous. The first phase of the contest runs through September 25.
