McInturff renovation in Highland, Maryland
While open living space has been in high demand for houses over the past several years, this renovation by DC-based architect Mark McInturff in rural Maryland takes the concept to a new level as the owners wanted an interior free of furniture.

Exterior
Located off the beaten path in Highland, the owners of the 1,200 square-foot cabin specifically requested a house where the only furniture would be a small table for eating. The layout is set up where no room is consigned to a specific use.

The owners — a NASA engineer and a cellist and their young child — use pocket doors at night that can be closed to create two bedroom spaces. Roll-away sleeping mats serve as beds.

Stair
A spiral stair was built to replace a ladder that leads to the loft level and there are closets and built-in storage. The white stucco portions of the house are additions to the original black asphalt-shingled structure. Heating comes courtesy of a small wood-burning stove.
