The long awaited redevelopment of Congress Height’s St. Elizabeth Campus is gaining speed. The Washington Post recently reported that Mayor Gray just released renderings of St. Elizabeth’s East Gateway Pavilion.
The $5 million pavilion, located along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE (map) will be constructed by next summer, and Mayor Gray is hoping that the park will be a “centerpiece for Ward 8,” he stated on Saturday. The design team of KADCON, Davis Brody Bond and Robert Silman Associates created the design.
The public space would include grassy areas, walking paths and stepped seating, with space for a farmer’s market and various cultural activities; one of the renderings imagines a fashion show. A few sustainable elements appear in the plans, like a rainwater harvesting system, an underground cistern and recycled materials like reclaimed wood.

The master plan for St. Elizabeth’s includes 180-acres of office space, retail, parks, and more. Many hope that the massive project will help catalyze development east of the river.
The first new tenants, about 4,000 Coast Guard employees, will be moving onto the site in August 2013 in time to enjoy the new park space. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is also planning to move to St. Elizabeth’s west campus, and the city is courting several other major corporations — Microsoft has been mentioned — to fill the remaining office space at the complex.
