A large new residential development is in the works for the White Oak section of Silver Spring.
The contract purchaser of 2220 Broadbirch Drive (map) applied to the Montgomery County Planning Board last month to rezone the 7.8-acre site. A proposed development would replace the office building and surface parking on the site with 390 residential units.

The units would be across a five-story building and a series of 14 two-over-twos along Broadbirch Drive; 12.5% of the apartments would be moderately-priced dwelling units (MPDUs). The development will also include 530 surface and structured parking spaces.
The map amendment would increase the proportion of residential to commercial density. The county's Development Review Committee will consider the application in two weeks.
A grocery store-anchored commercial development is also on the boards a block away after being revived earlier this spring.
