Judging by the latest crane count, development in DC is only accelerating.
There are currently 38 cranes actively being used at construction sites citywide, per the third-quarter report from Rider Levett Bucknall.
DC is one of only four out of 14 cities studied in which the number of cranes increased compared to the first quarter of 2020, when there were 25 cranes in the sky. Along with Maryland and Virginia, DC was one of the jurisdictions where construction was deemed essential despite the stay-at-home orders enacted nationwide in March.

The increase in cranes is largely due to developments like City Ridge and the second phase of the Wharf. Mixed-use development accounts for at least 17 cranes currently in operation.
The last time more than 30 cranes were accounted for in the city over was in July 2015, when there were 31 active cranes. The lowest crane count since then came in July 2017 when 20 cranes were at work.
