A little over a year ago, the perception of DC's building boom was bolstered with a report that the city's crane count came in at 29. Today, the pipeline is still humming along, with just two fewer cranes peering over the skyline.
According to Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB), the city has 27 construction cranes active as of this month. RLB's last quarterly crane index counted 20 cranes. Of the cranes that weren't observed during the last inventory, five are in The Yards east of Navy Yard near the Anacostia Riverfront.

Compared to the 13 cities RLB typically includes in the report, DC's pace of development is on par with that seen in San Francisco, which has 26 cranes in the sky. Denver, Chicago and Los Angeles each have 36 and Seattle has 45; however, Toronto, Canada by far has the most active construction scene, with 88 cranes at last count.
