By and large, the Silver Line had a pretty good first week based on ridership numbers recently released by WMATA.
Approximately 220,000 trips were taken in the line’s first week of service, which started on Saturday, July 26. The average daily ridership at each of the Silver Line’s five new stations came in at just south of 16,000 passengers. Metro’s weekday ridership goal for the Silver Line after one year of service is 25,000 trips.
Of the 16,000 weekday riders, Metro estimates that between and 8,000 and 9,000 were existing Orange Line riders who switched to one of the five new stations. The remaining 6,000 users were new riders.
The Silver Line was originally supposed to be finished by 2013, but delays hampered the rollout. The phase of the line that opened July 26 includes five stations that extend Metro’s reach by 11.4 miles: McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro, Spring Hill and Wiehle-Reston East.
