142,000 Visitors and $77 Million: Airbnb By the Numbers in DC: Figure 1

In late September, legislation was introduced in the District that would heavily regulate the city’s Airbnb industry. Shortly before Thanksgiving, the multi-billion-dollar short-term rental company published a report, perhaps in response to the proposed bills, that illustrates the economic impact that Airbnb has on the nation’s capital.

Here is a quick snapshot of the report by the numbers:

  • $77 million: The amount that Airbnb tourists spent in DC between September 2014 and October 2015.
  • 3,600: The number of Airbnb hosts in DC.
  • 38: The average age of a host.
  • $5,100: Annual earnings for a typical Airbnb host.
  • 142,000: The total number of inbound Airbnb guests that DC has hosted over the last 12 months.
  • 78%: The percentage of Airbnb listings in DC rented for less than 90 days a year.
  • 4.4 nights: Average length of stay for an Airbnb guest in DC.
